Motorcycles in Thailand

Since purchasing the motorbike in Thailand it has given me a new lease of life and freedom that I never had before. Having the apartment in Bangkok and diving very often in Pattaya it makes the journey not only fun but also a lot faster. I purchased a Honda Super 400 which does exactly what I need it to; it gets me around Bangkok 5 times faster than any taxi and allows me to go off of the beaten path to explore new areas and avenues. No longer do I need to rent or take taxis.

Road rules: Thailand has a fairly lax set of road rules and laws so you had best apply your own safety standards but expect the unexpected. ALWAYS wear a crash helmet. This seems like an obvious thing to say but not only is it tempting to remove it in the heat sometimes but apart from the danger involved there will be an on the spot fine from the police when they see you. I had great trouble in finding the perfect head protection whilst here so please feel free to contact me if you wish to know where in Thailand (Bangkok or Pattaya) is good for crash helmets. To wear a helmet for a few hundred baht does not say much about the value that you put on your head. There are some good shops that offer Shoei and Arai crash-helmets here in Thailand. The two main dangers of riding a bike here are the road surfaces (i.e. pot holes or missing man hole covers) and other drivers on the road (possibly drunk drivers or riders).  Ensure that you have good insurance. - I once asked a friend which insurance company was the best to go through - he replied earnestly, "My lawyer".

I purchased my motor cycle from an ex-pat Motorcycle store in Pattaya, Chonburi. The showroom was good as was the stock. I have done extensive research on motorcycles in Thailand now and have some great resources to offer. I have since come across some superb motor bike shops and stores that sell full ranges and buy for sale - Honda, BMW, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Yamaha – you name it. Over and above motorbikes I have some great contacts in Superbikes, racers, cruisers, choppers, ATV (All terrain vehicle), touring bikes, trial bikes, Quads, jet-skis and boats. (Btw: NO bikes are ex - rental bikes (hire bikes)).

In my search for other bike lovers I have found many a club of trails bike fans up into the mountains on a Sunday for a good burn out cross country off roading. Special long tours are one of the club's specialties also.

The Yamaha Fazer1000 pictured right is the new bike that I purchased in September 2004. This was from a superbike shop in Bangkok - since coming across this particular motorbike shop I have had no need to look any where else for any of my biking needs in Thailand.
